Sifnos

Sifnos when Pliny originally called "Meropi" and "Akis", in the case of Stephen the Byzantium "Meropi. The current name was taken in by other Sifnos, son of the legendary Attic hero Sounion, in others by the adjective "Sifnos" (= blank), perhaps from the ancient mining tunnels) and the other of "Siphnians" (= aspalax).
Southeast today Apollonia, on the hill of St. Andrew are double walls proellinikis Acropolis, showing the existence of the city at that time but an unknown name. The outer wall resembles with that of Troy and the Mycenaean era. In the same section found many pottery and tombs of the same historical period.
First inhabitants of the island is likely the Kares and Cretans. Herodotus believes that were the Ionians, colonists of the Athenians. In classical times the island was a great city that Herodotus calls the "police". with perikalli buildings found in today's post "Seralia" or "Castle" (f east). The city was Prytaneion, "Lefkofryx Market, built by white parian marble, a large temple and theater of Dionysos.

Ancient Sifnos had become known by a lot of gold and argyrorycheia, from which Sifnos had become very rich. But either because of depletion of reserves, either because of the disasters of the sea tunnels periepese in dreadful poverty.

In Kamares is the port of the island which is 6 km from Apollonia .. It is the largest village on the island. With its unique natural beauty and picturesque village, is a magnet for many visitors each year as the preferred place of residence.
Kamares, took their name from the many caves that were previously in the region and specifically the rocky southern coast. Today, in place of these arches - caves, has built a small picturesque village and wire the cellars where the fishing boats are kept in winter.
The central village of Kamari stretches on the right side of the homonymous bay, where the island's port. Has been developed around an important trading center. Shops in tourist items, to buy souvenirs from Sifnos. Cafes, restaurants and pastry shops run along the beach.
During the tour you will see the arches of the church of St. George, founded in 1785 and is the oldest building in the region. It should also visit the churches of Agia Marina and San Simeon. While on the road to Apollonia is the monastery of St. Anargyroi and just opposite the remains of an ancient Castle.
At the foot of Mount St. Simeon the growing village of Agia Marina or Banda addition, as the locals call it. They operate several boarding houses and taverns.
Kamares has a lovely beach with golden sand and blue waters. There is potential for water sports.

The beach of Platis Yialos is kosmikoteri beach of the island. Located on the south side of the island at a distance of 12 kilometers from Apollonia. It is the most beautiful beach of Sifnos and one of the greatest beaches in the Cyclades, and so it brings the most people. Feature is that it is safe to embrace a vagina and do not ever get Meltemi. Around the beach extends the homonym settlement. We operate several hotels and rented rooms complexes. After the bath you can have lunch in the coastal taverns serving fresh fish, roast and traditional dishes.
On the west side of the island lies the small village of Vathi. The closed namesake bay protects the picturesque village which is a typical example of Cycladic architecture.
