| Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean on the middle and east of Ikaria sea, belonging to the homonymous prefecture of Samos. From Ikaria is 10 miles, while the Asia Minor coast divided by channel width of only 1300 m ([= seven stages]. The maximum length of the island for D. A. is 26 miles and maximum width of B. TO N. is 11 miles and the maximum altitude is 1443 m (top of mountain Kerketefs). And the perimeter of the shoreline up to 86 nautical miles and the total surface of 477 tchlm. It is the birthplace of the great mathematician of antiquity Pythagoras, the astronomer and mathematician Aristarchus, the philosopher Assistant and many of Asopos. The island knows many tourists the summer. Of all the Greek islands that is located nearest to Turkey, which separates the Strait of Mykalis (or eptastadio Strait, in ancient times) that the height of the Poseiodoniou width is about 750 meters (in Greek territorial waters). |
