The prefecture of Messinia Greece is located in the southwestern Peloponnese. Enclosed to the north by the river Neda and the Arcadian Mountains, east of Mount Taygetos in the south of the Messinian Gulf and west by the Ionian Sea. Bordered in the north to the prefecture of Ilia, in the northeast prefecture of Arcadia and in the east with the prefecture of Laconia.


messinia2The highest mountain is the Taygetos (2404 m, top Prophet Elias), which shares with the Laconia and whose chain continues with other high peaks to the northwest. In the northeast border of Arcadia and a short distance from the Andritsena Elia is the Lykaio (1420 m). In the northern border with Ileia is the Tetrazio. In the west and the Ionian Sea ranging from north to south the mountains of cypresses (term Egaleo, 1224 m), the extension of which is located on the west Messinian peninsula, the term Lykodimo (960 m). In the center of the county and extends north to the south efforotati plain of Messenia. Messenia was inhabited since prehistoric times, mainly because of the fertile plains. There followed the findings of the Neolithic Age. Country is located near the remnants of the Mycenaean Palace of Nestor, the legendary king mentioned in the Homeric epics. The descent of the Dorians in the 12th century BC put an end to the Mycenaean civilization.
