The prefecture of Fthiotida is one of the fifty one prefectures of Greece and belongs to the administrative region of Central Greece. It borders with the prefectures of Evia through Evoikos Bay to the east, and Fokida Viotia south, southwest Etoloakarnania, Evrytania and Karditsa in the west, north and Larissa Magnesia in the east. Ancient times Fthiotida occupied the area north and south of Mountain Othrys as the Pagasitic and Maliakos bay. The country was called Achaia in principle, because it was the cradle of the Achaeans. The Achaeans are described by Homer as Myrmidones and Greek. After epoikisi of Achaeans in Ancient Greece called Fthiotis. In the 3rd century. the main towns listed are Meliteia the Fthiotida Thebes.
