Aitoloakarnania (official name: State Aetolia and Akarnania) is one of the fifty one prefectures of Greece. Situated in the western part of Greece. The county is a union of Aetolia and Akarnania. Its capital is historically the largest city and Missolonghi and economic center Agrinion. Other major cities are Nafpaktos, the Aitoliko the Amfilochia the Vonitsa, the Lobster and Thermo. The region is connected from 2004 to the Peloponnese via the Rio-Antirio bridge, and continues to operate in the same area, connecting with ferry (ferry boats). The counties that surround it are of Arta in Epirus, Thessaly Karditsa in the Evrytania in northeast and east of Fokida. The most important ports of the prefecture are the ports of Astakos of Nafpaktos, in Amfilochia and Vonitsa. It is the largest prefecture in Greece.

The predominant element in the mountainous province. The southwest coast characterized by the presence of lagoons, known to those of Messolongi and Etoliko. The widest and is the main river Achelous which results in a delta to the southwest, while the Trichonida largest lake, which is the largest lake in Greece (97 km ²). In the county there are the lakes: Amvrakikos, Lysimachou, Ozeros and ponds of Kastraki of Kremasta and Stratos. Besides Acheloos the county leak and Rivers: Evinos, Inachos and Mornos (at the borders with the prefecture of Fokida in antiquity was the name Daphne). The mountains of Aitoloakarnania include Panaitoliko northeast, Akarnania mountains to the west, northwest Valtos the Mountains to the south Arakynthos mountain, southeast of the mountains known as Nafpaktia Kravara and finally between Nafpaktia Mountains and Mount Panaitoliko without suspended mountainous volume are the Ori Lidoriki.
